Why Remove the Wisdom Teeth?

patient relieved of pain after having his wisdom teeth removed at Oregon Wisdom TeethWisdom teeth, or third molars, are the last teeth to develop in the mouth, usually appearing behind the upper and lower second molars. They are called "wisdom teeth" because they usually appear during a person's late teens or early twenties. When wisdom teeth erupt - or attempt to erupt - you or your teen could experience pain or swelling in the very back of the mouth.

Often, the jaws are not normally large enough to accommodate the four wisdom teeth. This is why wisdom teeth can cause more problems than any other teeth in the mouth. In fact, for nine out of ten people, at least one wisdom tooth remains underneath the gum line due to lack of space in the mouth.

For many patients, the wisdom teeth, also known as the third molars, usually start causing problems in the mid-to-late teen years or the early twenties. When wisdom teeth erupt - or attempt to erupt - you or your teen could experience pain or swelling in the very back of the mouth.

While the wisdom teeth do not need to be removed for every patient, Dr. Brannen will assess the growth and positioning of your wisdom teeth to determine a need for removal and your healthiest treatment plan. At Oregon Wisdom Teeth, we remove all types of wisdom teeth, including those that become impacted!

What are Impacted Wisdom Teeth?

When a wisdom tooth remains underneath the gum, or when it is blocked from erupting or coming into the mouth normally, it is termed "impacted." The tooth may be partially impacted, meaning it grows in crooked and breaks through the gum only partially; or, it may fail to break through at all, remaining totally impacted.

Serious oral health concerns can develop from partially impacted teeth, such as pain, infection, and crowding of, or even damage to, adjacent teeth. For totally impacted teeth, more serious problems can occur if the sac that surrounds the impacted tooth fills with fluid and enlarges to form a cyst. This enlargement can hollow out the jaw and result in permanent damage to the adjacent teeth, jawbone, and nerves, potentially resulting in a more involved surgical procedure for removal.

Do I Need my Wisdom Teeth Removed?

Because many concerns related to wisdom teeth may have no symptoms to start, patients may not always be aware of the damage being caused. As wisdom teeth develop, their roots become longer and the jawbone more dense. When you visit us at Oregon Wisdom Teeth for your consultation, our dentist will provide a comprehensive assessment to determine the best treatment plan for your needs.
